I joined the YMCA because Juanita, a friend, asked me to try this organization. So I took her suggestion September, 2010. I am a 5 year stroke survivor and partially paralyzed on my left side. During my stay with this organization I have achieved great success. I have learned to manage my dietary intake a little better with Juanita's assistance and encouragement.

Part of these programs that are offered to us give confidence to further our physical abilities, and as a result I now attend the water aerobics classes 5 times a week and recently joined Pilates classes with Lina. I greatly enjoy both classes and look forward to attending each daily. Also, I look forward to working out with Lina in the evening classes I attend because she makes them physically challenging with constructive motivation.

Oh, by the way, I have lost approximately 20 pounds since joining the YMCA. Thank you again, Juanita!

It’s no secret: The key to losing weight and getting in shape is to eat healthy and exercise, but real change is difficult without support and guidance. Joining the YMCA Weight Management class provided exactly what I needed to jump start my healthy lifestyle. Each week we were given practical tools to understand nutrition, how our bodies work, and how to discern the truly healthy food from the impostors. We even learned and sampled a few tasty recipes!

The YMCA program is unique because it allows you to tackle both aspects of getting healthy in one place: eating healthy and working out. I have gone through seasons of healthy eating in the past, but exercise has never a consistent part of my efforts. The Weight Management program gave me no excuses to avoid the gym. We worked out together as a class once a week and created an encouraging community that carried over into the week. We ran into each other in the pool or doing cardio and worked through food issues in the Monday night class.

Juanita went above and beyond to show us support and encourage us. It was easy to relate to her because she’s been where we’ve been and conquered the same challenges. She inspired us with her passion and energy. I lost a total of 16 pounds in 8 short weeks and almost 2 inches all over. For the first time in a long time I feel myself getting stronger and this is only the beginning. I’m determined to reach my goal. Thank you, Juanita and the YMCA!
